Camille Styles

Name:

Camille Styles

Profession:

Founder & Editor-in-Chief of Camille Styles

Where did you grow up:

I was born in Texas, but my family moved to small-town Missouri when I was in third grade, which was a bit of culture shock… I stayed all the way through Journalism school at Mizzou, but knew I couldn’t live permanently anywhere where it was that cold. ;) I spent a few months in NYC, then straight to sunny Austin where I’ve been ever since.

Where do you live:

Austin and Malibu

When you're eating healthy, what is typical...

BREAKFAST: I usually skip breakfast and sip black coffee, lemon water, and a chai tea all the way until 11am. Then I’ll eat avocado toast on toasted Ezekiel sesame bread with lots of sriracha, everything spice, and whatever fresh herbs are growing in my garden.
LUNCH: The aforementioned avocado toast… or a big roasted sweet potato with toppings, or in the summer – a chopped salad with as many veggies I can find in my veg drawer and lots of avocado.
DINNER: The clichés about Austin are true: we eat an insane number of tacos on a weekly basis! I love a grilled fish taco on a corn tortilla stuffed with smashed avocado, cabbage slaw, and a little chipotle aioli.
SNACK: An oat milk latté or a handful of almonds – I always keep a big mason jar of my sprouted, toasted almonds in the freezer.

What are your favorite spots/restaurants to eat healthy?

In Austin, I love Swedish Hill for salads and roasted veggies from their market, Fresa’s for the freshest most delicious tacos, and Uchi for the best sushi on the planet.

In LA, Gjusta, Great White, Santa Monica Proper, and the rooftop at Surfrider Hotel are some of my go-to spots.

What is your favorite indulgence?

Pizza. And I indulge in it frequently!

What are your favorite spots/restaurants to indulge?

In Austin, I love Comedor for an inventive Mexican feast and incredible margaritas.

In LA, Gjelina always has my heart. I’ve spent many, many birthdays there.

What would be your last meal on earth?

Pomodoro pizza, roasted cauliflower, and salted caramel pot de crème at Gjelina.

What is the best dish you cook / your favorite recipe?

Adam and I have perfected our grilled pizza and it’s the most fun interactive meal to make when we have friends over to swim in the backyard (are we picking up on a pizza theme in my life? Lol)

Where do you grocery shop?

In Austin, Central Market is the most bomb grocery store, and I love Swedish Hill for all their specialty goods – I can’t get out of there without spending way too much money on fancy tins of sardines and bottles of great olive oil.

In Malibu, my first stop is always Vintage Grocers – it is the most charming local grocery store across from the beach, with an amazing selection of fish – I’ll get whatever is freshest to make ceviche or crudo that night for dinner. I also hit up Fig Ranch for all my produce and Thorne farm for their Saturday market.

Top 3 items you always have in your kitchen?

I could easily name twenty, but lemons, olive oil, and Maldon sea salt. And eggs. And lots of fresh salad greens.

What is your fitness regimen? (how often & what you do)

Lately I’ve been taking a gentler approach to fitness and not doing as much intense cardio, and honestly I’ve never felt better. During quarantine, my social life has revolved around outdoor walks with friends, and most days I do a yoga/pilates video – I’m obsessed w/ Melissa Wood. I also have a quick stretching routine that I’ve done every night before bed since back in high school when I danced. It only takes a couple minutes, but I swear it’s been the secret for keeping me super limber my entire life.

What is your skincare routine? (Products, facials, etc.)

How much time do we have?! I could truly talk about this topic for hours. Okay –

Morning essentials: I splash with water, then use Biologique Recherche P50 as my toner, followed by True Botanicals Repair Serum, then either an oil (Vitners Daughter) or a moisturizer (Olay Ultra Rich) or both, depending on how dry my skin is that day. I mix my moisturizer with a few drops of sunless tanner for a bronze-y glow.

At night: A gentle cleanser followed by my P50, then Skinmedica Retinol .5. I let it set for about 30 minutes, then top with the oil or moisturizer listed above.

Every Sunday, I do an “exfoliation night” with my at-home dermaplaner (Dermaflash) followed up with a glycolic peel pad to slough away all the dead skin and prep my skin for absorption of my products. It’s truly the glowiest way to start the week.

What is your self care routine?

Well, I try to look at my skincare routine as less of a “have to do” and more of a self-care treat that I really enjoy every morning and night. During quarantine, I’ve also been taking baths almost every day (and don’t plan on stopping this post-quarantine.) I really prioritize quality sleep and create boundaries to ensure I get proper rest at night.

What are your favorite makeup/natural beauty products?

I love the Slip Tint from Saie – it’s really light and evens out my skin just enough, plus, it’s got a great sunscreen. I also keep a Pure Conditioning Lipstick from Beautycounter in every purse and bathroom drawer – it’s perfect.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 products would you take with you?

  1. Beautycounter Pure Conditioning Lipstick

  2. Saie Slip Tint

  3. my Flamingo razor.

What professional beauty/health/fitness/spiritual gurus do you swear by?

Lauren Roxburgh is such a genius for all things fascia and lymphatic system – I love her foam rolling routines.

Melissa Wood’s yoga and pilates videos have truly kept me going during quarantine, as well as Megan Roup’s dance cardio.

I love Kelly LeVeque’s approach to nutrition. Ashley Neese’s teachings have awakened me to the power of breathwork.

Most-watched movie?

La La Land. I can’t NOT watch it if it comes on my screen. ☺

Most life-changing book?

A Short Guide to a Happy Life

Coolest place you've ever visited?

Deia – a village in the mountains of Mallorca that is truly my spirit town.

Favorite hotels?

Hotel de Russie in Rome, Hotel Costes in Paris, Las Ventanas in Cabo

Most profound healing experience you’ve ever had?

To answer this quite literally, I was in a terrible car accident in my early twenties and broke my neck – after wearing a brace for several months, the bones in my neck fused themselves back together without the need for surgery, and I’ve been pain free ever since. I’ve never experienced a more visceral example of the body’s own healing power.

Who are your most trusted healers?

Although I learn the wisdom of so many people, when it comes to true, deep healing – it’s my own journey that’s centered on my relationship with God.

What has been your most valuable learning experience and what did you take away from it?

Motherhood has been the most joyful, challenging, wonderful, frustrating, and ever-evolving journey, where I’ve learned more about myself, but also about the joy that comes from setting aside my own needs at times to focus wholly on raising these two precious souls entrusted to my care. The biggest lesson I continue to learn is how quickly time passes – and that we’ve only got one shot at this life, so we’d better live it fully engaged and present.

Describe your perfect day.

The beach, my family, a big hike in the sunshine followed by a picnic lunch by the ocean. Maybe a sunset dinner around the fire pit with friends that night. And it’s got to involve Gjusta sourdough, a bottle of pinot noir, and some really dark chocolate.

What is your most valuable glow tip/secret?

The knowledge that just by being, you are enough. When a woman has this inner confidence that’s unshaken by outer circumstances, she has an eternal youthful glow that radiates from within.

Favorite quote?

There are flowers everywhere for those who are willing to see them - henry matisse

What are you grateful for?

The events of this past crazy year have made me even more grateful for my husband, Adam. After 12 years together, I sometimes still can’t believe that I get to experience each day – raising our kids, running our businesses, navigating life – with my best friend and true soulmate by my side.

What makes you glow?

Lots of laughter and sunshine on my skin.
